Now I'm curious what their company does. Does anybody know someone who responded to try to learn more?
Also, as much as I assume the people running this company are completely clueless, I could actually see them trying to spin this to their advantage. One of the questions on the application is about hacking systems besides computers - they could say they hacked their way into finding a CTO in a limited amount of time. Of course, like all hacks, they aren't meant to last, and the CTO left after a month and they have nobody that can build them a product.
I really wish YC had a blog of their most entertaining failed investments.
They're still accepting applications and haven't conducted interviews yet, but I'm willing to bet money these guys won't get in. The YC partners understand one of the most important things in a founding team is an ability to work together, so they always ask how they know each other.
