I think he meant using VMWare Tools on Ubuntu

As opposed to running Ubuntu under VMWare

Tools runs on the guest OS to provide better mouse/graphics/etc integration. Typically it gets broken with new kernels.

I am still hoping for a reliable/official VMWare Tools .deb repository.
