You'd think they're doing this for security. I'm taking a security class right now and pretty much I've realized that remote computer systems are super insecure relative to anything on site. With the recent events of security fails like what happened at the nytimes it seems that the risk is becoming extremely high. I think it's a smart move by Mayer.
