I find it's very model-dependent. You would think that the more powerful models would work the best, but that hasn't been the case for me. Claude Sonnet tends to do the best job of understanding my intent and not screwing things up.

I've also found that test-driven development is even more critical for these tools than for human devs. Fortunately, it's also far less of a chore.
