As the USA leadership asymptotically approaches "bat-shit crazy dictator", at what point do the majority of citizens get concerned? Asking for a friend.

More to the point… at what point do the countries of Europe ask the US to remove its military bases from the continent?

At what point does US get FAFO Nuked?

What’s “FAFO”?

"Fuck around, find out"

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.

HN crowd just flags almost any article about this stuff instead.

"Grandpa what did you do during the dissolution of American democracy?"

"Don't worry Jimmy, I did my part by flagging articles online so that we could focus on how to use em dashes."

The lesson is, time when you speak out exactly right, and you can get rid of the socialists and the trade unionists.

A friend of mine also wants the answer to that question. :-/

Vance heaped criticism on Denmark during his Friday visit, accusing the country of lagging on security and leaving Greenland open to invasion from Russia and China.
Missing from the reporting is Vance's consistent reference to Greenland as "a landmass".

You aquire or occupy a landmass, you go to war with a country over territory.

The language used doesn't bode well.

Even if we accept the premise that Greenland is vital to national and international (read as western) security, the west abandoned naked colonialism decades ago because they could maintain military and economic access to a country without resorting to it.

Yes, and that's already the relationship the US has with Greenland. Until recently anyway, obviously they've lost some control now by burning away any good will or atmosphere of cooperation hat there was

Malcolm Nance on Twitter/X (https://x.com/MalcolmNance/status/1905724835764044045):

"How will this happen? 1) A Battalion of marines, 10th Mountain & a mass of US Air Force Security Police are “quietly” alerted to draw weapons and Extreme Cold Weather Gear.

2) AFSOC CCT “airport control” teams and Special Forces mountain troops will be alerted to take Nuuk airport.

3) Dozens of C-17 & refueling aircraft missions will be scheduled to go to Nuuk & Thule. A clandestine capable civil airliner will carry CCT/SOF to Nuuk. A follow on C-17 missions to bring the below listed to take over administration.

4) US Marshals, ICE & DHS Swat teams will be quietly alerted to be prepared to take over airport & police duties on streets.

5) A US Special Operations Expeditionary warfare sea base & a helicopter carrier will depart east coast, stop in Wilmington NC to embark follow on SOF/Marines and head to Nuuk to act as interim “capitol/embassy” for new “American” administrators brought from Alaska.

6) Trump declares it a US protectorate territory. Names it Trump-land.

This is the stupidest idea and it WILL go sideways. Both Greenlanders and Americans will be killed."

I found this quite informative.

Who would kill Americans? Are the people of Gree land armed?

they hunt, so yes.

Crimea all over again.

That’s obviously casus belli — a legitimate justification for war under international law.

For war by whom? Denmark with NATO against the US?

My understanding: Denmark would face the US without NATO support in this scenario, though likely with NATO allies but outside of the NATO framework. Won’t happen, but such rhetoric constitutes legal justification for war. Just highlighting the severity - any other world leader making similar threats would trigger international crisis. Trump’s statements continue to be normalized despite their gravity.

Russia violated Article 1 of the Charter, by twice invading Ukraine.

The unwinding of international law is already in-progress.

The USSR was expelled from the League of Nations for invading Finland. The UN can't, or at least hasn't.

https://academic.oup.com/jcsl/advance-article/doi/10.1093/jc...

The U.S. invading any nation's territory surely leaves the Charter in tatters.

Who wants to bet Greenland (and Panama) was suggested by Putin as some sort of " you will leave glorious legacy". It makes zero logical sense otherwise. Why would US want full ownership of a frozen solid, even after 100 years of global warming at current pace, piece of land when they already have unlimited military presence and control over the region due to being close allies with the owner.

This is the only thing that makes sense to me too. Putin encouraging this to undermine the USA's (already shaken) moral standing to object to Ukraine, and Taiwan (and maybe the baltics and the phillipines) being absorbed by their neighbours.

Though, does it account for the European reaction to wannabe empires nibbling away at territory on both ends?

Seems certain to backfire for everyone involved.

At this rate they'll be deporting Inuit from Greenland to El Salvador by the halfway mark of his Presidential term.

Why does this admin feel like it's run by frat boys

They know what they are doing. It’s not just dumb statements, it’s a repeated, targeted messaging in preparation for an actual or de facto take over.

Aren't they supposed to at least pretend there's Nazis in Greenland so they have to "de-Nazify" it with a "special military operation"?

Amateurs.

Not easy to do when they’re the actual nazis

That's the spirit! Everyone I don't like (or who's land I want to take) is a Nazi

Or, you know, people doing nazi signs, flirting with nazis, pardoning nazis, defending Hitler, talking about bringing camps back, this kind of stuff

Honestly the only difference between the current US government and nazis is the antisemitism stuff. The current admin will focus on "leftists" and other minorities instead

Give it 4 years and you’ll see it for yourself

So do intelligent/informed people take project 2025 serious?

Greenland's population is only 56,000.

You could give every man, woman and child a million dollars ~Twitter, let them keep their current stuff, property etc and it's an amazing buy for the USA.

You could give everyone $10 million and make your money back in a decade or two if you were careful.

You could give them money to be nice but they do not have any authority to do anything about territory in response. In a strange way the US already has more authority in Greenland than it's residents.

What happens when China offers more per person then?
