Software engineers will do anything to not pay for software.


I have a Mathematica license and at the same time find this project quite cool (and I'm a SW engineer). I would be surprised if mathics developers are not Mathematica users.


It’s not about the price, but about the freedom.


Freedom of or from what?


Freedom to study and modify the software you are using.


To make and redistribute fixes or changes or forks


And to read the source code.


Some go as far as writing software for themselves, and even open sourcing it


I paid $20 back in the day for a 3 DVD case of Debian Sarge plus a magazine sized handbook.
