I’ve tried to build https://atomictessellator.com a little bit sci-fi because why not?! While I’m working on computational chemistry simulations I like to be inspired by the idea that I am working on cool future tech
Of course I prioritise function over form, but form has its place
I wish web development offered a diverse range of UI options to choose from. There used to be variety, but now, you're limited to either the monotonous Bootstrap, the lackluster Tailwind, or something in between that features either flat design or another boring style.
There’s many ways to style things on the web and in apps, but every framework has to grapple with a number of constraints:
- Usability (if a design system is too unfamiliar, people won’t use your product)
- Ability to compose components
- Accessibility (keyboard nav, clear roles, large font sizes, high contrast colors, etc.)
- Internationalization (left to right, etc.)
- Responsiveness
- Page load time
- Server side rendering
There is lots of room for small, artisanal design systems that shunt some of those constraints. It may be better to think of those design systems more as experiments, or art.
