Common low-calorie sweetener linked to heart attack and stroke, study finds (cnn.com)

Interesting precautionary study most relevant for those who are shifting to “natural” sweeteners and those with diabetes.

Xylitol, one of several “natural” versions of sugars are NOT natural at the doses you may be consuming. A single cookie supposed optimized for those with diabetes can cause a huge spike in blood xylitol levels.

Unfortunately no one yet really knows how that will affect metabolism or mitochondrial function as a function of your genotype, environment, age, or sex.

Perhaps the best most actionable advise (but still hard) for all of us is to wean ourselves off of the mild but pernicious addiction to sweets—whatever the chemical involved.

In this case high xylitol has been linked to higher cardiovascular disease risks. I’ll be skipping these “natural” sweeteners.
