Per the article, in early 2011 there were fewer than 7 billion people. The world population was expected to grow to 9 billion by 2045. But given that we have just passed 8 billion, the global population has in fact grown by 1 billion in just the last eleven years. 2045 is more than twenty years away ... in fact, 9 billion is now expected to be reached in 2037:
