I don't think the idea is to have a merge sort committed to memory. More like one can go from specification to implementation in a reasonable amount of time. Me, I kinda like to write my own first, then compare it with others.
Getting flustered when on the stage is a real problem, but it fades away as one gets experienced at being on stage. Then you can respond to snarky comments with a bit of snark of your own.
