But if Covid is the issue, isn’t it time to discuss the correlation between obesity and covid hospitalization? Sounds like in the short term, a war on obesity (sugar) would help more than anything.

Yes. Fighting obesity decreases the risk of cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Although I consider fighting obesity more of a long term effort.
