A lot depends on the rate of change of brightness as the star espands and then contracts. An advanced civilisation could gradually change their orbital diameter to maintain constant insolation. They may also be able to change their rotational speed to maintain the same day/night duration. All this would need one of those vaunted class 2 or 3 civilisations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale). Passives would be baked and then frozen...
