I thought it was common knowledge that bitcoin is not anonymous, therefore making "de-anonymized the bitcoin transactions" a bit of an overstatement.

Ah, now I follow. I assume they intended "de-anonymized" to mean "tied the public keys to identifiable human beings IRL."
