No one remembers Palm here ? That WebOS was a fantastic OS and Apple iOS / Google copied it's gestures unceremoniously and think they innovated while still not able to perfect it like Palm.
WebOS tablet, HP touchpad 10 got Android custom ROMs and still thriving. Its a shame that had to die.
Now WebOS lives in LG Smart TV platform. A big shame, this made me remember Tizen (Samsung WatchOS) which was reanimated from MeeGo which was made from MaeMo.
This will be the death of Android. Thanks to EU bureaucracy. They are fine with Huawei sending data unencrypted to CN servers. Apple charging billions for their closed walled garden. While Google is giving the OS for free, can anyone name one OS with alternative app store which works better than Google platform ? Before anyone jumps about the data mining. How about we talk about the Google dashboard options vs M$ / Apple (draconian idol) / FB or <Any company>.
"They will also be able to license Google Play separately from search and chrome, will full freedom to install rival apps" Hogwash.
Look at Amazon phones preloaded with bloatware and lockscreen ads and stupid quality fork. Or the MIUI Chinese crap, Huawei local market and how can we forget that VLC banned Huawei for their aggressive background killing ? This puts more corporate companies to turn their rubbish grade services and ruin Android UX further, add more fragmentation due to no Google involvement in the Gplay app Targeting or the security scanning from Gplayprotect.
I don't use assistant and all the background services and logging are stopped, search tracking is off, location history is off. I can set the permissions with every app and they stick. Unlike the rubbish iOS asking for each and every app for location for eg - settings needs location for what ? And need of iTunes BS for using the phone itself. And unable to sideload, or basic copying of music ? Add the HW ecosystem lockdown, planned obsolescence with their trash book pros - sealed batteries to the chassis, BGA soldered chips, prone to fail KB, flawed VRMs, Proprietary chips for EC HW from Basic I/O to Encryption.
Google is already dying due to the scale of them and trying to being innovative (stocks) and comply with US GOVT (NSA) but this EU incapable of delivering something substantial on the same grounds is relegated to these stupid political policies (controversial Article 13/14).
Brainwash of Apple and their walled garden is so fruitful ever, $1Bn no one cards about Android because they think its cheap but the fundamental aspect of offering choice - Bootloader unlock. Running GPL v2 code, Linux kernel, side load, root and tons of control in your hand, no worries Google is already chasing the same path with ChromeOS trash with rehashed Ubuntu/Gentoo running a containerized OS, running Android apps blown up, but ashamed to name Android at the event ! Fuschia OS another MIT license, to make Google sole controller over the OS unlike Android with GPL which enforces the changes to be Open sourced as well unlike the former which doesn't stipulate anything like that, once you make the changes behind the closed source you don't need to push them.
Yeah, Slate doesn't have a headphone jack, Pixel 3XL ugly imitation, Android P's downgrade from draw over other apps, killing accessibility APIs hard SDK targeting, closure of the hidden APIs loss of the QS settings in P, aggressive sand boxing like removal of app mah level battery consumption with packages in the name of security. Not just Android. windows too with their WDDM2.x and UWP walled garden over Win32 and 6 Month EOL perpetual alpha mining Guinea pig OS called Win10 Home. Its a shame how massive Apple impacts due to their market cap. Add the Intel BGA push to the mobile laptops from inspired by Apple because until Has well Intel HM class chipsets all had rPGA sockets and MXM GPUs with modular batteries. All is past since Apple started their MacBooks they all used BGA.
Kudos to everyone who made this Orwellian era possible, all the Apple fans. Its inevitable that liberty and choice will be drained soon than expected and we will start living in world like the movie "Equilibrium"
That RISC and CISC, nobody mentioned until yours. Why are people only caring about Perf/watt or the SoC beating out the ST perf of the Skylake uarch. RISC based processor with that level of cache is always having an advantage due to the Load and Store at register level (esp in this A12 case of having HUGE L$) vs the CISC's more transistor level perf + DRAM to exec instructions, causing higher TDP requirements PLUS the multi instruction execution parallelism capabilities. And entirely different code of AArch64 and x86_64.
Add the GPU and Direct X, and Encode/Decode functionality I know this is not the subject, the ARM processors simply cannot keep up. The author did also mention the limitations of the comparison also as mentioned above the Skylake Xeon is capable of running Hex channel ECC Memory with huge capacity that alone will outpace everything on ARM it's not a fair share of comparison at all. GB is an OS level optimized bench. There's simply no comparison point that exists.
Like I'd say to the author do a 4D render bench like Cinebench then we talk on this. He should at-least have mentioned the uarch part. Also on a side note, Apple underselling the chips ? That's really first, since Apple always over promises. Their latest meltdown on the MacBooks with low quality/specced VRM throttling the CFL machines is a joke.
Yes ! the clickwheel is too good, it has no competition in the UX dept be it with the Apple OS or the Custom aftermarket Firmware.
Still rocking a 5.5G iPod 30GB, Recently modded it with a 200GB MicroSD and it runs on the Rockbox which is Open Source and doesn't have any limit on the songs or storage that my other iPod Classc 6G 80GB has, thanks to Apple for that limit on the 6G iPod Classics, Rockbox can break that limit, But yeah you always need to boot to OF (Official Firmware) to copy tracks onto the iPod else there will be song skipping etc, Perhaps due to the third party HW chipset in between which is the SD Adapter (this is for every iPod 5G-7G with aftermarket modded HW)
And also yeah the 5.5G iPod (I think there are older iPods with this chip plus the iPhone 2G also had this/the same company's chip and 1st gen iPod Touch as well iirc) DAC chip is from Wolfson Audio which used to be great before the CL (Cirrus Logic) engulfed them & this makes it great fun to listen over my CL chip 6G, forget the phones, Apart from the Wolfson powered Voodoo modded Android phones nothing comes close to that level of detail, fun.
To people who want to mod them head over to the iFlash and get a hold of it, you'll be shocked to see how robust these things are. Plus there can be lot of inter mods that can be done like you can fit a 5.xG chipset into a 6-7G shell and vice versa - the frame can be interchanged+faceplate also goes in hand with the respective frame or need to shave a few bits off the metal frame, along with the backplate, headphone jack/hold switch flex cable plus massive battery upgrade(s) also exists - 2000mAh and up, these all are interchangeable. The Clickwheels, LCD panel aren't)
Avago Corp. now called Broadcom run by that Monkey man Tan will ruin Qualcomm into bits and pieces. Just like how Broadcomm was ruined, back then the key people left
& by selling tons of IP slashing $300M off the same fate will happen to Qcomm, first they will strip off the mega Patents which Qcomm holds and sell
them off to offset this $103Bn. Because that Tan is
interested in the NXP only due to the massive Automotive and IoT treasure (https://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1332...)
Surpisingly this is where Apple comes. Apple's iPhone's chipsets have tons of Broadcom tech
and they share ties with them, Apple may even buy them, Slowly the Android will die because no other corp apart
from Qcomm manages the OSS SRC development, CAF and XDA development speak for themselves.
For the better or worse, Qcomm is the ONLY leader in the OSS SoC game. Period.
Because
Intel doesn't do that and they retired after the Z3000 series powered ZenFone2 which has great processing at CPU with x86 for Android but poor SGX GPU
from Imagination Technologies & total lack of drivers and documentation made no OEM to opt for Intel.
Exynos (Samsung's) focus shifted when past Exynos powered SII, SIII was the last. Now the cat and mouse game happens with
their Knox lockdown on the Note5+ phones.
Mediatek is not even worth considering they are anti-GPL, HiSilicon (Huawei's) Kirin is in the same page as Exynos,
Open Kirin is only a try to grab XDA attention and budget game. Because once you make the chipset with Neural Engine which
will be under closed doors (NPU in Mate 10, Kirin 970) it won't be like Tensor Flow at all. Forget the OSS development under it.
Xiaomi doesn't bode well either with their super long 3-6mo wait times for kernel src drop they don't even stand a chance
against the Qcomm's Snapdragon SoCs and their CAF in both performance or the Open nature.
(Read- https://www.xda-developers.com/gplv2-and-its-infringement-by...)
Also Qcomm is responsible to destroy the SD80x platform off support due to the CTS check for
vulkan driver and lack of Nougat (Android 7.x) Reason ? Because these Corporates don't want to trust the OEMs,
and provide all documentation, If it leaks their IP is at stake of imitation, security issues. It's a dangerous game.
(Read- https://www.xda-developers.com/in-depth-capitulation-of-why-...)
So basically Google is now becoming Apple #2, with slamming doors infront of developers, Headphone jack fiasco, Overpriced trashware iPixels, also
they have a secure Element chip + A/B system making TWRP issues...(Read - https://www.xda-developers.com/magisk-v14-4-root-pixel-2-xl-...)
And coming back Qcomm did every innovation and acquired Patents legally for more than $25Bn,
Most of them include 4G/LTE and 5G R&D having a lead over Intel/Mediatek by 20Months but
they are raising price for that chip or license deals & as Apple wa earning a lot
over the iPhones, Qcom license works per phone profit basis. So they started this war against Qcomm since they are not new
to kill off the ones who have higher revenue as their producer-customer relationship like GT Adv tech ( Read - https://www.reuters.com/article/us-gt-advanced-tech-bankrupt...),
Imagination Tech (Apple's so called inhouse GPU is nothing but Imagination's IP after poaching a few of the key people they decided to drop ball
Read - https://www.anandtech.com/show/11243/apple-developing-custom...) have
Intel, which are inferior to the X16/20 modems at just 600Mbps vs Qcomm's 1.2Gpbps downlink.
Apple vs Qualcomm started long back, dating back to 2007 and WiMax threat to Qualcomm,
(Read this - https://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1332242)
but now Qcomm gets razed due to the Apple's global domination. Plus NXP antitrust scrutiny.
Unless they get that NXP, Apple will continue to blaze them & Broadcom too.
This is what Apple does to industry, I suspect wearing my Tin Foil hat, They pressed Broadcom of this deal on Qualcomm, now even Huawei is dropping royalities
for Qualcomm and SKTC asking to renegotiate Qcomm IP licensing it's a mess, because despite the Qcomm's nature of Patent wars they are the only OE who support
OSS which is most crucial aspect nowadays regarding a smartphone vs Planned obsolescence.
Ultimately Broadcom is dangerous. NXP deal should move else Qcomm will lose money due to Apple war and there are ton looming around..& remember vote with wallet.
All the laptops, desktops and their chipsets They all sport 3.5mm jacks with SPDIF optical + mic and headset. Dedicated soundcards like ASUS Xonar, Creative SoundBlaster X RGB they ship with gold caps and high grade chips with proper 7.1 Dolby and Surround certification + THX Audio and even MSI uses Nahimic DSP + ESS Sabre chips in their high end gaming GT series, Even the latest trashbook pro's with USB C have a jack which is meh with Apple's Cirrus Logic used across all their devices, My Samsung Galaxy S with Wolfson chip + Linux kernel level driver (Voodoo mod) offering huge control options for user trumps most of the devices, Also the iPod5.5G of mine with a more superior Wolfson chip.
The Audio is always Analog, Digital is in your computer or streamed as data but the audio is only audible in Analog. And every phone has an DAC chip to convert all the data you feed to the mic to the chip and mobo and OS, the DAC converts its so that you can listen to it.
Going digital will make things complicated, Like for eg in every dongle you have to rewire the DAC to the USB to the chipset and SoC to make sure that the Audio dongle works. The 3.5mm is still standard across, your Passenger jets, Fighter Jets, Professional Audio, Casual user, Audiophile community. Why ? Because it just works, the mechanical strength of the 3.5mm port is robust plus the 360 degree freedom and the USB C using the Digital line needs another circuitry and breaks standard. Ultimately this 3.5mm port is the de-facto standard deployed on ALL systems across the world.
Apple did for 3 reasons.
1) Apple has two different lines of wireless devices that sell for premium prices. Beats and Airpods (Which are literal trash grade sounding, using an W1 chip is to bridge that steps one takes to pair them and accelerometer + gyro aren't ground breaking when coming to the purpose, ofc one wont buy them for audio but for convenience while they still work with the iPhones which have the 3.5mm adapter)
2) Each and every lightning to 3.5 needs MFi certification that will give them continuous stream of revenue on all audio gear and including the people who use the 3.5mm old headsets + those dongle money, Apple became a dongle company from tech company all the innovation and brave policy of Apple is gone with Steve, Tim is nothing but Ballmer at M$, who ruined Nokia and M$ both..
3) Strong DRM control, Closing analog will make then have control over the I/O, A thoroughly made 100% business focused decision.
3a) Please don't bring the space waste B$ to here, see Note 8 PCB design and a hint, check the MXM GPUs on MSI GT83VR and Titan and Clevo P870DM3 which are sporting a 1080 GPU which is socketed and has power to beat the Desktop chips. PCB design is to adhere by OEMs standards don't spout what Coolaid corporate Orwellians demand showing that Taptic engine and missing space...
This Apple's CEO is a beancounter and a disease to the innovation as they keep in raising the walls of their utopia where ignorance is bliss.
Next up thinking about the USB C Audio, that standard barely materialized and lacks proper standard, Pixel for eg doesn't have Video out and iPhone's old 40 pin has dedicated Audio line, the new 3.5mm adapter has only DAC while the AMP works from the Phone, for Apple it's easy but for the people it's complicated on multiple stages.
a - No proper audio quality, the DAC chips which will be used in the dongles are undocumented, forget the phones which are offering dedicated DAC/AMP in theirs - Axon 7's DAC HiFi works on LineageOS too a unique one, HTC 10, Vivo is famous for their HiFi. Cheap knockoff ones will sound worse, If you add a DAC inside a headphone that ruins the purchase for many as not all will like that sound signature where as Analog 3.5mm ones can have clear audio tuned for that IEM/Headset.
b - Dongles - More space waste inside your pocket and no standard, perhaps iPhone ecosystem is standard, can't match tot he 3.5mm spectrum but on USB C it's worse doesn't and doesn't have any AMP or any Analog line, it's 100% digital so you MUST ship one with a proper circuit with no cross compatibility (Try to use U11 dongle on the HTC 10, btw 10 beats U11 in audio since the AMP is not powerful enough vs the 10)
c - BT and Wireless ? they existed since Nokia and work the same, Perhaps the LDAC and APTX but they need licensing and even with 3.5mm jack wireless works the same, Waterproofing also exists the same, Note 8 is a perfect answer it has a full silo for S-Pen + an always on Home button like apple's taptic gimmick and retains IP68 and has multiple Biometric security with the 3.5mm port under water with S-Pen removed too. LG v30 does, v20 did with HiFi Audio. AND the batteries go dead in these wireless sets, make drain more and eventually go to garbage with the planned obsolescence device of yours. Where as normal 3.5mm ones last until they die
d - High quality Audio is existing, HiFi gear is widely available without any complications, in the end everyone uses it, The wear and tear resistance is higher on the jack vs the USB C which often breaks and the 2 degree possibility vs the 360 degree beats this greedy decision of Apple, Plus the wea
So I don't see any advantage plus Unfortunately due to the stupid CEOs who is following the blind lead of Apple, M$ is shifted to Apple type marketing, UWP going against .exe Win32 apps, idk why all companies are obsessed with this company Apple while their whole ecosystem is limited and not deployed across multiple HW, for eg - Windows works in Govt, Military and critical mission control systems, Apple can't match that but unfortunately the people just chose form over function and made Apple that huge, look where are we. Soon the eSIM will come in the iPhones (I called it first) & planned obsolescence push further, Draconian controls, How much further you will bend, we said okay to the dedicated video ports to wireless, IR blasters, Now removable batteries also gone and now next is this ?? Question yourselves to believe what they say or the real facts which base on liberty and choice, an essential aspect for humans.
To all the advocates who think Apple's E2E Encryption key and data is only existing with the end user and believe that San Bernardino incident on Privacy related iPhone unlock.
Granted both the Secure Enclave thing and the iTunes transaction logs are entirely different but essentially they all are chained together in the Apple ID which is protected by an Encryption key and the backdoor building is all that fuss was made for the PR, As usual I don't expect any consumer centric corporate to prove their idea on the privacy.
Apple did it for sole reason being 100% business decision.
1) Sell more MFi licensing since they will earn more per end product made for iPhones. Whereas with the 3.5mm they won't get any source of sustained income.
2) Sell more of their Music equipment after they bought beats. AirPods and Beats wireless with W1.
3) For users wishing to keep using their existing headsets, theirs potential revenues on replacement dongles.
4) The iOS lock that Apple has is a death grip, Many people will adopt to the technology whatever Apple does, be it either the simplicity of the OS or the Apple ecosystem populace which will help them make the Analog open standard close and earn through more and more of their proprietary interfaces. A DRM control mechanism making the product more steered towards Apple in holding control over the end user.
This is a move by apple to drive these other areas of business and improve revenues outside of the iPhone category.
Does removing the headphone jack give them 100% control? No. But it helps push enough people to spend money on things that Apple will directly benefit from additional revenues.
The Xbox Scorpio SoC is RX480 again, Polaris chip on steroids - coupled with more GDDR5 6.8GHz@326GB/s BW vRAM 12GB with reserved to OS @1.5-2GB Plus a quad core Jaguar cluster added in with Vapor Chamber & full DX12 HW improvements. That should be a slightly OCed GTX 1060 level of perf looking from the specsheet, Plus they are banking on that DX12 due to the CPU being Jaguar still, Also the GCN HW of the AMD thus helping it to boost the ASync compute. Prev gen was also a RX480 based but cutdown chip less than cut down GM204 perf (<980M)
And It did 4K forza which was a direct port from the Studio 10 to the Scorpio from XB1 @60FPS/~64% GPU usage, Mobile GTX 1070 and up should be still outperforming it & when it comes to proper optimized titles like BF1 / TF2 / TW3 / MEC etc will aid further to render more details, Also running old 4K forza on Console GFX options vs PC GFX options is not an apples to apples comparison. Note that TF figure on AMD and Nvidia aren't same either...
Consoles can never reach PC levels of detailing due to the market and targeted audience. I'm a PC gamer, I can't stand to the degraded visuals on the Consoles, Also the Nvidia Tessellation is superior to AMD. Sad part is due to the % of market the PC games get downgraded / unoptimized mess due to these consoles Also the XB1Scorpio doesn't add any significant advantage over the PS4Pro because of less than stellar exlc. titles & Checkered board rendering used. Finally the native 4K@60Hz or 30 isn't out, I highly doubt an RX480 can run the games at 60FPS 4K, the power isn't just there for the recent games and upcoming powerful engines developed with Pascal HW will outperform this weak chip soon..
