>Stop fantasizing that the government cares about the shit you buy. This is not about you.

Government cares very much what people buy and worst yet companies care even more.

Believe or not society functioned pretty well before the surveillance zoo and people were able to spend their money without worrying about their privacy. For the 99% of people that aren't money laundering or tax evading, yes the right to privacy is important.

It reminds of this project[0] using lora protocol and custom icb. The advantage of using lora is that it can go up to 25 miles and uses 1/10th of an amp when in use so it can last for years.

Microsoft really could be using their resources much better than this... Seriously..

I would be pretty cool if there was a mass effect mmo imo. I prefer the lore of that game over whatever is in star citizen and bioware has actual experience developing AAA.

If EA had half a brain they would beatup robert and take his development money.

Star Wars Online is the closest you'll probably get, also made by Bioware and probably what sucked the life out of the ME team at the time.

You're saying that the development tools, backend hosting, and other play services provide no value to developers? I disagree but at the same time google has been doing a less than great at promoting android apps and helping developers monetize their apps. Atleast compared to apple.

Kinda wish microsoft would make Windows 10 the last backwards compatible windows and start from scratch. Virtualize Win10 for backwards compatibility and start from a blank slate with modern design principles.

Briar[0] is suppose to be a bit more secure than matrix which uses google captcha.

Matrix doesn't "use google captcha". Matrix.org, one instance among so many, uses google captcha. Matrix is a federated protocol, so you can choose another instance or setup your own

It would be interesting to see microsoft to create a meta operating system that would run virtualized instances of windows 10, xp etc. to run applications securely and in the way to easily backup/version. I would easily pay $200 for such an operating system with enterprise grade support. There's nothing on the market like it right now.

I hope microsoft can figure out how to successfully monetize the operating system market again. I don't like them putting all their eggs in the cloud marketplace.

Wouldn’t that necessitate them supporting every one of those OS’s, including security updates as well? Compatibility mode is one thing, but a virtualized instance would be something else entirely, I would think.

They did it in a limited fashion already. Remember the "XP Mode" addon for Windows 7?

I think if they had three compatibility VM modes: DOS/Windows 3.1 (might need a more complex DOSBox-like emulator, to solve the '64-bit OS doesn't like 16-bit stuff' problems), Win98SE, and WinXP, that would cover the vast majority of compatibility needs. Maybe there could be (downloadable from their store) more special-purpose images, for the guy who needs "WinME mode" or "Win2000 mode".

But it still feels like we're missing out on the true potential of VMs. They could be huge for privacy and security-- you run anything suspicious in a VM, and maybe only allow specifically (and user-configurable) permitted data to be persisted on disc.

I want my browser living in a seperate VM, that I can nuke from orbit in a single click. If I get drive-by downloaded, or just end up with a huge cookie file, poof, it's gone.

> you run anything suspicious in a VM

I think Windows already has some sort of feature like that, although I never really tried it (and therefore can't say how smoothly to use the implementation is) because it requires HyperV, and at least on my computer HyperV breaks hibernation.

QubeOS does what you are describing but it's obviously not as polished as a commercial product would be from microsoft. I believe chromeOS runs browser instances within their own vms and has pretty good security.

They already have personalities and ntvdm. The shell even has buttons for it (under properties for .exe files.)

Uber's price directly correlates with the amount of business it does. It has doesn't have a monopoly on transportation and if the union pump up the prices then there will be less jobs. It's not like other union shops where they can more or less force a monopoly.

Uber was never suppose to be a full time job and by unionizing/legitimizing it, it's going to decrease ridership.

Just picked up the new macbook air m1 and I am staggered to find that I can play starcraft 2 and bioshock decently on a laptop that draws 30watts and is capacitivily cooled... Really just unbelievable.

So if valve could someone get ahold of some cutting edge arm processors in the next few years then this could be very viable(though I doubt they will get it out before the next version of the nintendo switch).

Valve has money, but not Apple or Microsoft money. I doubt they'd be able to source a high-power arm chip + the necessary hard/software features to make something like the rosetta compatibility mode possible.

Not necessarily right now but a few years down the road when it actually releases(though no one knows when they'll actually release knowing valve's track record).

Not sure why people are downvoting me....

According to the article they are shooting for a late 2021 release date if nothing goes wrong. Fingers crossed they'll say more at E3, which they're attending this year.

Not sure why people are downvoting you either though.
