I agree for the index, much less for the browser. I'm using Orion since a few months and beside some occasiona bugs I wouldn't ask anything more. If it was open source it would be perfect.

On the index side I agree, I think they are using other people indexes so far, I don't know if they are thinking about building one themselves.

Same for LLM, but I think that there the problem is even worse.

GitHub is about the community. There are others alternatives, more in line with what Mozilla claim to be their view (I'm thinking to GitLab, for instance), but nothing gives you visibility like GitHub.

Sad to see that Mozilla is becoming less and less what they promised to be once Google funding are depleting.

My two cents, as European, is that since we are more and more asking to LLMs for information, it wouldn't be wise to let a foreign country, not even truly democratic, to choose the information we get.

The Chinese don't get any of information if we use self-hosted DeepSeek or Qwen. They are open-source. You can run them in an air-gapped environment that can't phone home.

But their models are gimped by bad censoring. At least I can still ask chatgpt how many innocent civilians America has bombed.

Wouldn't that would imply that Silicon Valley companies collude with governments? That's simply impossib ... oh, wait ...

EU has many issues, but sometimes it pulls nice tricks.

I personally would pay even if the results were _slightly_ worse. But for me they are as good or better than Google.

I also use a lot the assistant, so I'm happy customer so far.

Apple is to blame for many things, but the fact that if whatsapp has access to your contact list you can't start a conversation with any phone number in an easy way is entirely up to them.

This said, it's good to see that apple is slowly adding things so basic that it's baffling they are not there since years.

Do not know things on Iphone side but in android I justs end the device to myself and click the number, then it gives option to chat via whatsapp.

Do you think that software comes out of thin air? It takes time and effort to develop and maintain software. The fact that it doesn't cost to reproduce it doesn't mean it doesn't cost to create it in the first place.

And it takes time and effort to develop the method for creating the crafts.

That doesn't change that they're different in reproducibility...

Absolutely incredible indeed! People asking money in change of their work, how dare they? /s

All these years where megacorps gave people stuff for free have tainted the minds of many.

If you questioned the subscription model over the perpetual license, that would be somehow acceptable, but assuming everything must be free is just non sense.

Great article. I'd be interested with something similar for industrial and public transit cases.

I totally get that it's feasible to run a common household with 100% solar+batteries, but I'm less convinced a train or an hospital can be run during a winter evening with solar+batteries alone. Let alone one of those new fancy AI datacenter.
