Thinking back, there really should be some lessions that send students off to solve user problems after having learned a programming language, where there is a much easier solution without having to program something. Some refinement sessions that teach them how to understand the problems.

Internships should be for that, but that's fallen by the wayside in many places.

Great post! And I must admit that this must be the best website I've encountered in ages. The mix of oldschool OS with the pixelated font.. Perfect!

Communicating process is a top-notch hint. Getting everyone involved in meetings to the have the same context and expectations about the common goals is never easy.

It IS a skill. And most often it is disregarded by those who did not yet conquer it ...

Interesting. What I would like to see is a single core comparison of the compared renderers, since that would indicate the efficiency of the code. I would assume the popular renderer are not as fast but also need less cpu-time overall?

There is a section on single-performance comparison in the thesis!

Alternatively, you can also check the results from the official Blend2D benchmarks: https://blend2d.com/performance.html

Or my version where I added some more renderers to the existing ones: https://laurenzv.github.io/vello_chart/

In Germany many stores still accept cash and some even only accept cash and we are ridiculed for this... Seems like one of the rare instances where this is useful :D

It's sad the number of stores I've seen where they just shut down when they can't use the checkout machines; the clerks aren't allowed to do math even if they could.

Whereas the smaller, owner-run stores have more leeway; the local tiny grocery "sold" all freezer/refrigerator food for cheap/free during a power failure. The big Walmart closed and threw everything away the next day.

The odd thing is that the US has been teaching math using the “in your head” heuristic (New Math) for almost 20 years and yet young adults cannot make change without the machine to save their lives.

God help me if I hand someone $25 for a $14.75 total. I’m getting small bills back.

I wonder what they teach in Germany.

You could imagine that it won't work for long after publishing this. I would've either used it for myself and my friends or messaged the city about this straight away, so they can avoid things like that.

I don't like these kind of apps that allow people to be smart around regulations that should apply for everyone.

Wow. GPT-4o is exceptionally biased towards pop culture. Harry Potter, Aragon, a sith lord, Elon Musk...

Not over here. As far as I understand Op's solution does not utilize a gpu.

I actually see gpu utilisation in OP's website when I move things (m3 pro), but this other solution shows much less gpu utilisation (prob more efficient?).

You could use that to display some kind of billboard affect, so that an image is always in a correct aspect ration to the observer in front :D Please could someone with a macbook do this and post a video here? :D

How would you break down the problem with rendering 2D to someone who has no rendering background? Is there a single large issue or is it a complex multi-issue endeavour?

Winding numbers are easy to explain, but hard to compute efficiently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winding_number
