All good points. I would add that democracy in the workplace, which affects most people's day to day lives far more than that of the government, has been decreasing for decades, with the decline of unions and skyrocketing of wealth inequality.

agreed though I think the appearance of workplace democracy affecting day to day more than governmental democracy is only historically (rather than inherently) true of post-war america. that standard could radically shift in the future and I'd also say that it's government policy or stagnancy that enables the context in which workplace democracy has declined.

I've just payed my landlord over venmo this past year. It's super convenient

I have an echo dot hooked up to my living room sound system which allows me to use my phone to play music wirelessly over bluetooth and Spotify connect. My TV also has a terrible sound board so instead of plugging an aux cable directly into the TV, I connect my Apple TV to the dot over bluetooth, which has much better sound quality. It's a big convenience over switching the aux cord between the various devices.

Jailbreak it, install openssh, ssh in and edit /etc/hosts. There's also packages in Cydia that add adblock lists to your hosts for you.

My neighborhood is filled with trees so there is a 5 minute part of my commute that XM can't get a signal for more than 5 seconds in a row. It's as if it only takes a single leaf to block the signal.

I'm looking at some of my saved snapchat videos on iOS and I am almost certain from the quality that there's no downsizing done here. Maybe if you send it to your story and then download it from there it'll be downsized to what exists on their server.

Move it to a desktop and you'll notice. I saved a number of videos directly from the camera view and it's much lower resolution than the built-in camera, like 720p or lower, which I didn't (disappointingly) discover until I got home.

It has a built in low-light photo mode on iOS that I use over the stock camera app all the time. In full light you can't even tell the difference between stock and snapchat photos.

My city attempted a large tax on sugary beverages only, but they ended up compromising with the opponents of the bill and implemented half the beverage tax on diet as well as sugary drinks. It seems like once the regulation for soft drinks is on the table, it's only a matter of time before diet sodas are included

Is diet soda really any better with regard to health? I was under the impression that the sweet taste without the calories causes problems with insulin or satiety or something (can't recall details).

There's some evidence that artificial sweeteners have a negative effect on the human gut[1].

That is compared to water, not sugary drinks. People aren't drinking diet drinks as a replacement to water, they are drinking them as a replacement for sugary drinks.

That seems a weird compromise. Who is against a soda tax, but pro a tax on diet soda?

I would have thought most big soda manufacturers sell both, and even if you only sold non-diet soda, you think it would be easier to pivot to diet soda than push for legislation to raise it's price.
