I'd also suggest Berlin, but aren't they in berlin already? If so, I'd be interested to know why are they looking for yet another country? Sure, you need to know some German to get around, but otherwise berlin has a pretty good climate for startups (and the cost of living is not as high as in Switzerland or Iceland).

I used to have a problem with readjusting window sizes and positions between the laptop and my 24" display until I discovered full-screen apps in the recent OS X. Now I just run the text editor full-scren on both

I also hated to have all my windows flying around when I would (un)plug my MacBook Pro from external devices... Some time ago I discovered Stay (http://cordlessdog.com/stay/) and now I have no more problems with that. It is great, you can define position of windows for all your different setups (profiles). In my case I mostly have two setups, at office (where I work most of my time) I plug my MacBook Pro to an external display and when I am at home I work directly on the MacBook and sometimes I connect it to another external display.

I am a big fan of being able to just work whenever I want on my computer... but I also am extremely big fan of plugging it to external displays and use ergonomic devices, and I try to use them as much as I can. At my office I use a Kinesis Freestyle and a trackball, and am very happy since I started using it. We spend so much time in these "positions" that we should minimize possibilities of having problems and be confortable... at the end we want to keep doing this for long time ;)

The title is disappointingly misleading — the actual features of command-line clients, i.e. auto-completion, variables, output-formatting are left out in favor of comparing SQL dialects for the most basic operations.

misleading, not a real comparison. and offtopic i'd really like to have a nice mysql curses commandline client

Anyone into contemporary classics? I really enjoy piano and cello music while coding, like Ludovico Einaudi, Brian Crain, Julia Kent, Zoe keating etc.

I have recently become quite fond of Arvo Pärt and other classical minimalist composers, largely because I like the texture of piano and strings with the simplicity of minimalism while I'm working, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vdgZAJVnes

Apple's iCloud. It's free (up to 5GBs), no ads, and Apple is not in the ads business, hence, they have no use of your personal data (as opposed to Google). I have no idea how good are they in actually protecting your personal data, but I don't recall significant breaches of mobile.me/icloud in the past year.

> Apple is not in the ads business

Really? http://advertising.apple.com/

Yes, sorry, they are. They are not serving web ads though, nor we have a reliable account that they collect information from user's iCloud emails to enhance the relevancy of iAd ads.

I was about to suggest iCloud, but it does not support some features that may be of interest to HN type users: in particular, "email personalities" - the ability to send outgoing email through the iCloud SMTP server using any of your various non-me.com email addresses.

and Apple is not in the ads business, hence, they have no use of your personal data (as opposed to Google).

Aside from the fact that Apple is in the ad business (to limited success and motive thus far, though if the hardware sales profit train slowed down you can guarantee they would grow more interest), even if they weren't they still are incredibly interested in data about their customers. All businesses are interested in slicing and dicing and categorizing and maximizing sell through, etc.

Sorry, I was inaccurate, they do serve ads, but not web ads, and so far I don't have any reliable information stating that Apple scarps the contents of user's personal data to deliver more relevant ads in a way google does.

With new PostgreSQL major releases (latest one is 9.0 w/ embedded replication) its getting better and better. The community rocks and there are exciting new features coming to 9.1 (i.e. synchronous replication).

Full disclosure: My daily job is postgres developer/consultant and I love it :)

$3K is way above average in Moscow, and Moscow salaries are much bigger than anywhere else in Russia. To give a comparison, a salary of $1K per month is considered above average in most of the Russian cities, except for 2-4 largest ones.

It's above average if you're not software developer or you have no experience.

What about Greece? Is, for example, 2000 EUR per month net a decent salary there?

That's a huge salary for Greece, believe me :)

In Spain/Greece most salaries for young people are 1000€/600€ month.

I think we should also measure an average number of deaths caused by a single incident and the average number of deaths among strangers caused by a single incident. The incidents at nuclear plants are rare, but the consequences can be much more dangerous than from the other energy sources.

I actually wonder what would happen to a google account without a public profile linked to a gmail address. IIRC deleting such account is impossible without deleting a corresponding gmail account. Loosing all your emails one day just because you are not into google buzz and other fancy social stuff would be horrible.

I'm wondering too. On https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount , it says:

> You don't yet have a public profile. Learn more Create a profile or edit your personal info without creating a public profile.

I have no idea if I'm meant to create a public profile to save my email, or if I already have a private profile, or if I have no profile at all and this doesn't affect me. Hoping the last one.

As far as I can tell, deleting a profile has nothing to do with Gmail, or the rest of your Google account, besides Buzz. I deleted my profile, and still have access to the rest of my Google stuff, including Gmail.

You should be ok. It says that 'Deleting your profile won't delete your Google Account.' here: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=...

As far as I can tell this statement is about a public profile. The private profile is essentially a google account, and I don't know a way to delete a google account and keep a gmail address associated with it.

No, the private profile is essentially a public profile. If you delete a public/private profile, all access to buzz is gone, and all past 'buzzes' will not be accessible (effectively deleted).

That's quite confusing. How can I tell that a profile is private vs public (which seems to be a default)?
