Deluding ourselves here it's nice to think the day has finally arrived but it hasn't

We need to address the problems rather than pretending it's already great

Shutting down your laptop and having to wait five minutes for systemd to shutdown because of some timeout when you need to get your flight is just one of those reasons you end up going back to windows

The day is probably not here for everybody (more novice-level computer users) but for PC gamers, the day has arrived.

PC gamers are willing to put in a little bit of time to gain freedom from ads and tracking and the bloated corpse of Windows

Power management that “just works” is one of the nicest things in macOS.

It seems HN has decided to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it’s already great.

I think you have decided to bury your head in the sand, if you think systemd is a dealbreaker for desktop use.

Truth is, Linux has been fine for many people for a while now. I've used it for six years without needing to install Windows for anything. Steam Deck owners are putting in millions of hours playing the hot new Windows releases, do you think they are complaining about systemd on Reddit?

Please re-read the comment by mixxit. He mentioned systemd as just one example of why Linux isn’t there yet and no amount of gaslighting and pretending it ain’t so is going to change that.

Apart from systemd, tell me what isn't great. The whole benefit of the ecosystem is that you can pick and choose your system components and if you don't like any of then, build your own. I am not trying to be dismissive, if I use a windows these days, it is for work and some errant vm to run windows specific app ( hr block comes to mind -- I am just not willing to spend time to run it any other way ).

i don't want to pick and choose or build my own. I want something that works.

Gordon should have stuck to the symphonic

Meanwhile android demanding I use Gemini and then telling me my Google account has no Gmail to turn on Gemini to add a calender entry

And then my exchange business plan telling me copilot is here over and over in a giant popup screen and then saying - it's not available yet

How many workplace pensions take profits from privatised water company investments?

i remember doing the staff of the wheel quest as a newbie level 16 wizard who had barely seen any of the world

i met so many people who helped me get into some really scary places (lguk at 16 is terrifying) as i wondered in all sorts of climates and places, what a fantastic place!

looking back the world felt so different and huge and alive with life

i will never get that experience again
