I eat meat. I tried some Quorn turkey the other day and it was surprisingly like turkey. Not perfect but better experience than a poorly done dry turkey breast

>want >in the hopes of

But these are still bellyfeel words. What does more rigorous analysis of tariffs say about these things? Do they bring manufacturing back? Do they create jobs?

Well, ends are not bellyfeel. Bellyfeel here concerns the means. So, in this case, thinking that merely wanting an end somehow entails that the means employed are good and effective, because the intention is good.

But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It's not enough to want something good. You have to also use means that are good.

> What does more rigorous analysis of tariffs say about these things?

Basically that tariffs are benign to harmful and most countries should stop using them. They often hurt manufacturing in the long run. They invite retaliation and shrink your market.

Sure, some companies might eventually build some facilities here they otherwise wouldn't have, if they think the tariff regime will hold. But what ends up happening is that they just set up bespoke operations to serve this single market only and not for exporting. So instead of a factory to sell widgets to the whole world, we have a small factory to sell within the country only, where we all pay higher prices than the rest of the world.

Meanwhile their primary global operations where they enjoy free(er) trade are cordoned off from our market. It's a bit like you see with American companies that move into China.

What countries have fewer tariffs than the US? Yes tariffs have the ability to support domestic production, be that via bringing manufacturing back or creating jobs. 100%, these are actual results and why almost every country has them. The US has a weighted tariff average of around 3% which places them at the lowest of the list only above countries that have to import almost everything like New Zealand, Australia and Iceland, and around half of EU rates. So even with the random adjustments Trump has made the US would still need to effectively double tariff rates to be commiserate with the EU.

Should the US adopt the European model? Open an inquiry to explore an investigation that could become en exploratory committee? Sounds like a bad idea.

They are already making moves that might suggest that future. They are going to stop packaging VRAM with their GPUs shipped to third-party graphics card makers, who will have to source their own, probably at higher cost.

You can find a list of other companies owned by Booking Holdings here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booking_Holdings

Priceline, Agoda, Rentalcars.com, Kayak, OpenTable, Rocketmiles, FareHarbor, HotelsCombined, Cheapflights, momondo

I constantly get recruiter emails from Agoda. Anyone ever work for them? They want to move me to Thailand which doesn’t make a ton of sense to me, considering I’d be asking for an American level salary regardless

What part of the Constitution makes you think Congress wouldn't be allowed to fund public radio, exactly?

Article 1, Section 8: The Enumerated Powers of Congress https://www.senate.gov/about/origins-foundations/senate-and-...

Congress does not have the power "To Establish a Public Press".

What if that alternate someone had been better than DOS/Windows and then engineers cut their teeth on that instead?

Then my comment may have been about a different OS. Or I might never have been born. Who knows?

I built myself a new gaming desktop and set up my old one next to our TV, telling myself I'd get it all situated with controllers and my large library of split screen games. We have a Shield TV for most streaming, so the desktop is pretty much only used for two things: My wife watching Chinese shows on random websites and watching movies remotely with friends over SyncLounge[0].

So while the Steam Machine is intriguing, I really don't have a good reason to buy one. That being said, I like the idea of supporting this kind of hardware development.

If I purchase one it is effectively a console-killer for the big screen. The fact that the PS5 is now in the twilight phase is making me consider it. The era of exclusives is almost over as basically everything I want to play on PS5 is also available on PC.

At the same time I don't need a living room machine to be a full-fledged desktop. Nor is that desirable with kids.

I don't have much reasons to buy one either, besides "It'll be fun to thinker with" and "I want to support any company trying to make Linux go mainstream, because ultimately that'll make my desktop experience better". But those two feel more than enough, and I'm happy to open my wallet for them.

You should look into modding. There have got to be a ton of automation and NPC scripting mods out there without any sort of AI model necessary.

I read quite a bit when I was in school, but I honestly don't remember a direct assigned book I actually liked. There were times we got to choose what we were reading for school and in those cases I read some that stuck with me like "1984".

There is a certification group called Best Aquaculture Practices[0] that sets standards for hatcheries, farms, feed mills, and processing plants regarding sustainability and quality. They've got a new feed mill standard[1] but it seems like it gives feed mills a few years to come into compliance to use sustainable fishmeal and fish oil.
