> Where YOU live you can have all the unbridled capitalism as you want

A bit rich when all the companies mentioned are across the pond?

So what, they should slurp up all the data they can?

"Nobody asked for it, and nobody wants it."

Whenever I read this I just lose all credibility for the author. As if millions of DAU having their problems solved are invisible to them.

"Studies" like what?

'The paradox of choice' says the exact opposite. When presented with more jams to sample, more groceries shoppers stopped to try, but less actually bought. Reducing decisions is conversion 101.

Why is it reasonable to interrupt everyone else's freedom to hear someone talk?

If you believe someone is actively harming the audience (as he seems to), a peaceful protest is the way to go.

We'll learn soon enough if he is right and the community stands (sits?) with him or not.

But I couldn't not giggle on "freedom to hear someone talk" as an inverse of "free speech". Jack Dorsey has many platforms where he is welcome, and there are plenty opportunities to hear him share his thoughts. It's not like someone on the fringes is being shut off.

He's not "violating" someone's freedom to listen to a talk, but rather he hates the guy and wants him gone. At least he's doing something about it

Or more likely: Confirmation bias. I also occasionally get Nigerian memes on IG despite never having searched it. But unlike you I don't have the Nigerian film google search history that would lead me to conclude it was targeted.

Put another way, if you googled a Swedish film then saw Swedish memes you would think that was targeted. Then upon viewing the Nigerian memes you would have attributed it to a random video rather than anything targeted.

Yup. One takeaway I took from the book "Factfulness", is a useful exercise for encountering bad news; ask "would the opposite news have reached me?". The answer is almost certainly, no.

Got a link to the cinematic you mention? Haven't heard of it.

Sure! In order to set a bit of context...

First watch the 2022 cinematic [0], to get an idea of what they normally ship. Then watch the 2023 cinematic [1], to see how badly they messed up. And just to drive the point home, compare it with the 2024 cinematic [2] which is a return to form.

If you look at the 2023 cinematic in a vacuum it might seem generic and uninspired, but then when you compare it with the 2022 and 2024 cinematics the quality gap becomes apparent.

Wow, what a great post, thanks so much. I don't know a single thing about LoL but yeah, shipping what is essentially a single tracking shot through a pretty static environment vs the complex, choreographed scenes with characters fighting etc. Pretty big difference.

One thing to note is they used a different vendor than usual. In most recent cases, Unit Image do their cinematics, but weren’t the ones for your 2023 example.

Likely came together last minute and their preferred vendors weren’t available.
