madoff died in custody at FMC Butner. he was not released before he died.

I think you are confusing Bernie Ebbers (Worldcom founder/CEO in Clinton Mississippi) with Bernie Madoff (big ponzy scam in NYC)? Yes, they are both named Bernie.

you are right, i did conflate the two. apologies.

thanks for that link, i found it really cool.

yes, legibility—at least during the presentation—was really bad. hope it’s better on device.

There is also an animated show called Pantheon that deals with “uploaded intelligence” and the process is likewise fatal. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It had two seasons and the story was completed.

Pantheon is great. I had almost given up on good SF in visual media when this was recommended to me.

In the United States, even paying for the highest level of TurboTax does not get me the ability to have my mortgage information prefilled. Still have to enter the information that Chase sent to the IRS on an IRS form in manually on my form. Tax preparation in the US is truly the wild west.

this works as a motivating impulse until it doesn’t. while it is still working i would encourage you to consider trying to identify what you value so that you have a comprehensible self-perception absent anyone’s expectations of you.

hopefully tomorrow is in 2021, regardless of time zone or day and month.

Common misconception, real programmers use zero indexed years. None of this 1BC/BCE to 1AD propaganda people keep sprouting. ;-)

if a person who is nominally in a journalistic role ends up producing fabulism and they are then demoted and reassigned, it’s better for that person to lead everyone to believe they were pushed out for irrelevant things many years ago rather than the issue with their work at their workplace that in fact literally just occurred. it’s just confusing, because in any other context i don’t think people would fall for this whataboutism.

a pediatrician who gave babies placebo vaccinations and was then demoted and assigned to “what does being a doctor actually mean” class and then quit, and then told everyone he was fired because people found out he got speeding tickets constantly would be dismissed out of hand once everyone found out about the whole fake baby vaccination thing.

andy is a liar. he purposefully mislead his colleagues when he had good reasons to doubt the credibility of his single source. he produced a work of fiction and the premiere newspaper in the world took it as carte blanche and shared it with the world as the truth. it does not matter what happened with him a decade ago, or three years ago, or even immediately before caliphate. the only relevant thing in this story is that he failed miserably at his only job.

Why wasn't he forced to resign essentially immediately afterward, then?

he was reassigned and essentially demoted and given the opportunity (along with the cocreator, who is still at the times) to basically do remedial “how not to lie to everyone” and he decided he was not interested.

yes, you just verified robinhood is a clearing broker. they are not a clearinghouse. imagine a clearinghouse as almost guilds brokerages set up to get a useful function they needed that banks do not want to provide. so you have a ton of clearing brokers and they all send their money to the clearinghouse and then they can just forget about everything other than order execution and settlement and ignore all of the hard problems in the middle. the clearinghouse is itself an institution that also has incentives, and one of them is “in periods of extreme volatility, i am going to increase the capital i require to be held here in order to be certain all of the middle bits can be executed”.

i have no idea why people think robinhood is a clearinghouse, that doesn’t make sense. they don’t want to do that! they want to do PFOF with execution or make settlement take 0 days so they can further take advantage of retail or whatever. being a clearinghouse sucks. no one likes you. banks don’t want to do your job.

i love this kind of chutzpah.

dante is exiled from a city he lovingly intersperses throughout his fiction in some of the most famous and beautiful and utterly complex poetry of all time by one of the most famously corrupt rulers in all of human history for things he wrote ~in his poems~ and over 700 years later the sum total of human technology allows someone to say his political conviction by a no longer existing state is justified because of these thought crimes on a site that notionally believes in freedom of speech or at the very least thought.

hope it is better wherever you are dante.

I will readily admit that I don't have much context on the environment around or the legitimacy of his conviction, which is why my main point wasn't about that. I only added it as a response to that reply specifically asking about that aspect.

My main point remains "I think his conviction was already overturned, so there's no gesture left to for modern authorities to symbolically make".

Wasn't the claim that Dante committed actual crimes of corruption, not just thought crime? Or did I misunderstand the post you're replying to?

You write beautifully, yet with too long sentences :).

thanks for the feedback, re-reading that makes me want to take a breath. :)
