Interestingly enough, Kagi has a new browser, Orion, that's also WebKit-based. Besides the obvious macOS, it's in Alpha for Linux and "in development" for Windows. May the best non-Chromium browser win!

Kinda interesting that they were able to resurrect the WebKit engine on Windows, might have been quite an engineering feat. In the past (2007-2012) Apple distributed a Windows version of Safari, but it's been more than a decade since it was deprecated and the engine only supported Apple's ecosystem.

I asked a somewhat niche question once. The single answer made it clear that the answerer had not read the question. At least my question wasn't immediately closed, I guess. I totally understand why people are seeking alternatives.

Firefighters and other emergency service personnel can get through laminated glass, but it takes much more time and effort, as well as tools you're not likely to have in your car.

Ten years? I've been doing it for over twenty. Readership is something you have to chase, and if that's what you want, that's fine. But for some people, like me, it's the writing that's important.

I for thirty years. But usually only very short blogs about personally relevant events, such as buying books. I am not really interested whether it is read or not.

completely agree

Kodak did a lot of government work over the years. When the news came out, no one panicked. Kodak was the biggest employer in the region and had a lot of local goodwill, we trusted them to take care of things.

Needless to say, that is no longer the case.

Kodak also accidentally detected nuclear fallout. https://www.orau.org/health-physics-museum/collection/nuclea...

A local apple farm and cider mill uses UV for pasteurization of their cider instead of heat. I use it to make hard cider, and it's as good as unpasteurized cider (no longer legal to sell in NY) was, and I don't have to use sulfites to kill off wild yeast.

Tubes are definitely inferior to transistors in a lot of ways, but nothing sounds like them (FETs come close). Plus, there's the comforting glow of those little glass bottles that just seems right.

My favorite, kind of ironic, advantage of tubes over transistors is that it's easier to source replacements.

On Firefox Mac, it doesn't scroll with the scroll wheel, though it does with the down arrow key. Go figure.

Looks cool, but I'll stick with my DSLR scanning setup.

I think you've hit on something important with work and accomplishment. I've heard software developers say over and over again they don't feel like they've actually accomplished anything when they complete some coding task. It's not just bug fixes, but tasks in general. Some of them take up hobbies like woodworking, where the results of your work are something tangible you can see and touch. But it's not just software development, a lot of jobs involve work that seemingly produces nothing despite the time and effort spent. It's not hard to see why so many people find their work miserable.

Yeah I mean literally cleaning my house, watching dirt suck up, and reorganizing can be much more satisfying than fixing some stubborn backend systems bug that takes years of knowledge to have the mental tools to fix - lol

Cute, but I can't help but wonder if the resources used for this could have been better utilized elsewhere.
