Can anyone provide an alternative source please? I've done a quick search and can't find any other sources reporting on this apart from 2x New Scientist links which are both pay-walled (as is the single Internet Archive submission) so my b.s detector is in the red on this one.

If in fact the BBC did do this (and that's a BIG if) that would be a huge story and a major breach of the BBC's editorial policies.

...so my b.s detector is in the red on this one

Why? A 2020 documentary called Welcome to Chechnya looked at repression of LGBT Chechens and was the first documentary to use "advanced facial replacement techniques using artificial intelligence and novel visual effects technology so the viewer could see real faces displaying real emotions while still protecting the identities of the speakers" [1]

The documentary was released by HBO Films. The BBC also broadcast the documentary.

Thank you for pointing out this precedent in this use of face-swapping - it's a great idea, and (together with the OP link about Hong Kong protestors) changes my understanding of the threat/value of face-swapping technology.

1. The New Scientist is a respectable science magazine from the UK, there's no reason not to believe the story.

2. I think you have misunderstood what they did. People often request that their identities are hidden when they are interviewed by news organizations. This is usually done by filming them in silhouette, and sometimes altering their voices. This is no different, except that the AI "mask" gives the viewer a different face to look at. It's not controversial or a breach of any policies.

I watched the documentary.

It was very upfront about it.

And it's weird because you really couldn't tell (except one of the guys looked blind, pretty sure I'm not just being racist as he didn't look like that at other times)

They often hide interviewees faces; this is just a different method. As long as they disclosed this fact, I don't see what the problem is.

Personally I'd prefer other ways of hiding identities, then you'd know. You couldn't tell that they'd done it, and I'd infer that as some people were politicians their faces weren't changed.

It seems consistent with their policies regarding anonymity and safety.

News reports already have voice alterations, silhouetting and "Name has been altered", if they used face-swapping but put a big fat disclaimer on the screen, would that be a problem?

While I'm more than prepared to keep an open mind on the subject, this is either a joke (in which case - Whoosh!) or a "0/10, Needs Improvement"

I even went as far as following and reading all of the links that eventually led to https://aip.scitation.org/doi/10.1063/5.0087175 and had to double check that it wasn't posted on the 1st of April.

YMMV and I appreciate that my response is precisely what Agent Smith of the Matrix franchise would say but there has to be better and more lucid ways of forwarding the conjecture/theory than this p.o.s.

This is a duplicate submission of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33717757 submitted by yourself yesterday and also includes the typo of 'insigh' vs. 'Insight' as the tongue-in-cheek comment pointed out (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33717905)

This reads as a straight-up advert for Cloudflare (which I know it isn't because heck, they don't need to advertise this way) but the TLDR boils down to ... I migrated to Cloudflare and all my problems were solved!

I'm confused - Do you mean you were asked to work/be on-call 24 hours per day, seven days per week? If so - hell no. Hopefully I misunderstood what you meant by 24x7! [Edit to update] If that is in fact the case, I would suggest you ask for all of the Directors' cell-phone numbers and call them at 2am or 4am etc and if they don't answer then ask them why they expect you to do something they don't do themselves but I honestly think I must be misunderstanding the 24x7 bit

Yes, there was misalignment on service ownership and management decided on Friday that our team would cover 24x7 on call for 10 days of holiday (we have a company holiday the week of us thanksgiving).

The 10 days were split between 3 team members (myself and 2 others).

The situation is a failure, feels arbitrary and makes me livid.

——-

Would love to do that :p get their numbers tell them to make sure they have internet at all times and be within 5 minutes of their laptop at all times.

Sounds like this service can be without support for a while. After all, it wasn't important enough for someone to figure this out in advance. I'm sure if it goes down overnight the business will be fine.

PTSD is a condition that usualy occurs after exposure to a single traumatic event. C-PTSD (Complex PTSD) is a condition caused by exposure to repeated events that you are unable to escape or avoid so perhaps the better question to ask is - "Is Burnout a Form of C-PTSD?". Although it might seem a nit-pick sometimes it is important to label things correctly to avoid the confusion about 'how can being shouted at by your boss cause PTSD?' vs. 'how can being shouted at repeatedly by your boss cause C-PTSD?'

At this point I would normally quote from the DSM [1] but since they have yet to differentiate between the two conditions (although they will do so shortly) I will instead quote from the ICD [2]

QD85 Burnout: Problems associated with employment or unemployment: Description: Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and 3) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.

6B40 Post traumatic stress disorder: Disorders specifically associated with stress: Description: Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop following exposure to an extremely threatening or horrific event or series of events. It is characterised by all of the following: 1) re-experiencing the traumatic event or events in the present in the form of vivid intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares. Re-experiencing may occur via one or multiple sensory modalities and is typically accompanied by strong or overwhelming emotions, particularly fear or horror, and strong physical sensations; 2) avoidance of thoughts and memories of the event or events, or avoidance of activities, situations, or people reminiscent of the event(s); and 3) persistent perceptions of heightened current threat, for example as indicated by hypervigilance or an enhanced startle reaction to stimuli such as unexpected noises. The symptoms persist for at least several weeks and cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

6B41 Complex post traumatic stress disorder: Disorders specifically associated with stress: Description: Complex post traumatic stress disorder (Complex PTSD) is a disorder that may develop following exposure to an event or series of events of an extremely threatening or horrific nature, most commonly prolonged or repetitive events from which escape is difficult or impossible (e.g. torture, slavery, genocide campaigns, prolonged domestic violence, repeated childhood sexual or physical abuse). All diagnostic requirements for PTSD are met. In addition, Complex PTSD is characterised by severe and persistent 1) problems in affect regulation; 2) beliefs about oneself as diminished, defeated or worthless, accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt or failure related to the traumatic event; and 3) difficulties in sustaining relationships and in feeling close to others. These symptoms cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

I think you might have a misunderstanding of what is under discussion - to quote from the filed complaint

"To increase adoption, starting on June 15, 2021, DPH worked with Google to secretly install the Contact Tracing App onto over one million Android mobile devices located in Massachusetts without the device owners’ knowledge or permission" which is very different from installing an app!

Feedback on the site:

"Lucky you — you can try this feature for free!" <puke and an instinctive f* you response because, no actually 'Lucky you' for me taking the time to click and try it out but, Whatever>

Next: 'Upload photos of yourself' with no clear and easy to find privacy policy, nor an explination of if your are sharing uploaded pictures with third parties nor any easy to find way of ensuring any uploaded pictures can be deleted.

With all of the above - Why the heck would I even take this for a spin? A hard 'nope' from me.

Is it a face to face or an online one?

If it is face to face - do a trial run on the route so that on the day you don't have the worry about where to go and how to get there. This reduces the source of stress with one less thing to worry about.

If it is remote - make sure that you can connect and see/hear/be heard. Most offer a test facility. Making sure that everything works on your end reduces the stress of trying to get things to work on the day.

Do a quick search on the company and glance through the Glassdoor / Fishbowl reviews.

Get a good nights sleep beforehand (as hard as it may be).

Knowing where to go or knowing that you can easily conect up for the remote interview allows you to focus on the important stuff (i.e. selling yourself and your abilities!).

Good luck, I hope it goes well.

I think the intent of the question was - How was x Billions invested in his company. Perhaps you misread?
