Here's the companion video for the paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA_DrBwkiJA

Well that was a fantastic watch. Thanks for sharing.

for bonus points, the video should also be executable :)

Something is off with the data.

Chino, CA

Report 4 of 11 "Orange and red sphere over Northern Virginia [...]"

Report 7 of 11 "This was a red light which was moving quite fast over Aberdeen, Scotland. [...]"

Report 8 of 11 "Orange Sphere over Northwest Florida [...]"

It is not an isolated problem for Chino, CA. Most(?) locations that have more than one report will include a report for an event that is nowhere near the selected location.

The text box seemingly has nothing to do with anything you've clicked on. I was zoomed in to Toronto, looking at the few points there, and the text in the too-small scrolling box was about Norfolk Virginia. That's pretty strange.

That could be. The first 2 I clicked on referenced landmarks that were on other ends of the globe.

I was going to mention a similar thing. There are some UP tracks in Southern California that haven't existed in over 30 years now, if not more.

It originally didn't load for me on Firefox. I turned my ad blocker off though and it loaded.

Thanks for catching that! I couldn't find anything from my logs, that was frustrating. The frontend of Peerdiem is served from www.peerdiem.com while the backend uses www.api.peerdiem.com. It seems that a strict tuning of the AdBlocker might prevent requests to a subdomains. I will put up an explanatory text on the homepage for those encountering the same issue. Thanks again!

Yep, Firefox with ad blocker here too. That seems to be the issue

The first think I noticed was this "OHM Worldwide Rendering Testbed" about 30 miles east of Seattle. https://openhistoricalmap.org/#map=12/47.7505/-121.7306&laye...

natfoot set that up as i recall. the rendering engine is relatively new and we're still working through how we want certain aspects of it to work. this is all kind of a big experiment where we're standing in the middle of a field with our pants down around our ankles.

Funny! Right in my back yard

There was a kid I knew in school who I would consider a very good tetris player. One time someone else was lamenting that they always get bad pieces and he said, "The Tetris gods will never give you a piece you can't play, you just don't know how to play it." Which has resonated with me for an oddly long time in my life.

This sort of thing comes up a lot in card games like mtg. Some players are convinced they're naturally unlucky. I like to phrase it as "bad decks get bad draws". To improve one has to be luck oblivious: improve what you can, accept what you can't. Bit of a serenity prayer approach

It's also important to understand that in a best of 3 format, if you have a 80% winrate per game against every player (which is insane btw), you still lose 10% of those matches. In a 9 round tournament day (which is standard for YuGiOh iirc), your chance of winning every single round for the entire day is merely 40%. If your edge is more realistic, say 60% winrate, then you lose 35% of those matches. More games per match are your friend for determining who is actually better.

On Google Earth you can use the timeline feature to actually see when the imagery was captured (or at least uploaded?). The plane sitting near the hangers was from a capture in May 2016. Google Earth currently shows several newer captures, including one from September 2021. The current one from September 2021 is actually far more interesting in my opinion. In it, you can see a B2 sitting in a field about a quarter up the runway (38°43'27.63"N 93°32'54.86"W) with stuff scattered all around it and trucks sitting on the runway. https://i.imgur.com/lh1hkWN.png

Ah very interesting! I saw the skid marks on the runway north of the plane and was wondering if it was an emergency landing situation considering that it was just on the side of the runway. Pretty cool to read the article and get the other half of the story.

I'm very intrigued as to what is going on here - it almost looks as if it veered off the runway. Anyone got any suggestions?

The op of this thread replied to my comment with a military.com article, and in that article there is a link to an article on thedrive, https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/42392/damaged-b-2-spir...

"According to sources, the B-2 experienced a hydraulic failure in flight and had its port main landing gear collapse during landing, sending it off the runway with its wing dug into the ground. We cannot confirm that this was the case at this time, but the satellite image above does concur with the gear collapse/wing down aspect of the incident. While it is possible the aircraft was rolled off the runway after the fact, this is unlikely, especially considering its wing-down disposition. The damage to the aircraft also remains unknown. "

Ouch, that sounds expensive! Thanks for the follow-up.
